Portillo, Raudales Earn NSCAA All-South Region Honors
|

FORT MYERS, Fla. – On Thursday, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced its Division I All-South Region teams. Senior midfielder captains Josey Portillo (Metairie, La./Grace King HS) and Cristian Raudales (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) were each recognized by the media outlet, earning second and third team honors, respectively.
“I am proud for these two individuals to receive this well-deserved postseason honor,” said A-Sun Coach of the Year Bob Butehorn. “Josey and Cristian have been tremendous leaders for our program throughout the last four years, and it’s great that their careers come to a close with more recognition.”
For the second consecutive season, the Eagles had a pair of athletes named to the All-South Region teams. The Green and Blue were one of four A-Sun schools to have individuals recognized, as Stetson and ETSU each had one athlete named to the first team while the Hatters also had a pair of third teamers and Jacksonville added a second team selection
Landing a spot on the All-South Region team for the second straight season, Portillo earned a second team nod after recording 13 points, good for second on the team, on three goals and a program-record seven assists. The Metairie, La. product graduates as the program’s all-time assists leader (15), while ranking second in both total points (31) and games played (70). A College Soccer News Preseason third team All-American, MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List honoree and an Atlantic Sun All-Conference second team selection, Portillo was also named to the All-South Region first team a season ago.
Leading the Eagles offensively this season, Raudales finished atop the points column with 15 points on a program-record tying seven goals and one assist. With a pair of game-winning goals on the year, the Bradenton, Fla. native also found the back of the net on three occasions while the Eagles were playing a man down. At the time of his graduation, Raudales holds the program record for points (43), goals scored (19) and game-winning goals (6), while second in matches started (69).The All-South Region honor is the first of the Raudales’ career and adds to the A-Sun All-Conference first team selection he earned earlier this offseason.
The 2011 campaign came to a close with FGCU holding a 12-6-2 overall record, while securing their second consecutive A-Sun regular season championship with a 7-1 league mark. In their first year of postseason eligibility, the top-seeded Eagles clinched the A-Sun Tournament title with a pair of one-goal victories over fourth-seeded Mercer (2-1) and sixth-seeded ETSU (1-0) to earn the leagues automatic berth into the NCAA Championship Tournament.
