NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite holding a 19-5 edge in shots, the FGCU men’s soccer team suffered just its second loss in its last 22 Atlantic Sun regular season contests on Saturday night, as it fell at Lipscomb, 3-1, to cap its opening weekend of conference play.
All three Bisons’ goals came over a 20-minute span in the second half to drop the Eagles to 3-5-2 and 0-1-1 in the A-Sun. Lipscomb is now 4-8 and an even 1-1 in the conference.
“We were very good in the first half, but didn’t get a goal,” said head coach Bob Butehorn. “In the second half we were punished by our inability to clear the ball and then didn’t show the necessary maturity to deal with being down a goal. I give Lipscomb credit for finishing their chances.”
The chances were undoubtedly in favor of the Eagles, but Lipscomb converted on three of its five shots in the win. Although the scoreboard read 0-0 after the opening 45 minutes, FGCU presented itself with plenty of opportunities thanks to owning a 6-1 shot edge.
The second half opened with the Green and Blue applying a ton of pressure. FGCU got off five shots, including three on frame, in the opening 15 minutes, but were unable to put one on the scoreboard and take the lead.
With just two shots through 60 minutes, Lipscomb opportunistically took a 1-0 lead at the 60:20 mark when Luke Salmen tucked a shot into the bottom left corner for the goal.
Freshman Jourdan Gooden (Fort Myers, Fla./Lake Forest Academy-IL) had a breakaway bid at tying the game in the 64th minute, but his shot sailed high. Just minutes later, the Bisons took a 2-0 edge on a goal by Josue Chavez and added their third at the 79:49 mark.
Senior Jelani Smith (Mississauga, Ontario/Rick Hansen Secondary) gave FGCU life in the 83rd minute with his second goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Lipscomb snapped a four-game losing streak against the Eagles. Freshman Joey Hutchinson (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) picked up his first career point with the assist on Smith’s goal.
FGCU’s 19 shots led to Lipscomb keeper Miguel Hof making seven saves, while sophomore Nathan Ingham (Ontario, Canada/Keswick HS) made one stop for the Eagles.
FGCU will look to get back on track on Friday, Oct. 12, when it begins a home weekend at the FGCU Soccer Complex against USC Upstate at 7 p.m.
