MACON, Ga. – Following a weekend in which he scored three goals, including a game-winning and game-tying tally, freshman Isaiah Madrid (Albuquerque, N.M./El Dorado HS) has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Co-Men’s Soccer Player of the Week.
Madrid led FGCU to a pair of wins at ETSU and USC Upstate to extend its winning streak to six in a row. The forward tied Friday’s game against ETSU in the 84th minute with a penalty kick tally before Xavier Silva (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Prep) scored four minutes into overtime to give the Eagles a 2-1 victory and propel them into sole possession of first place in the A-Sun.
FGCU remained at that top spot after Sunday’s 3-0 triumph over USC Upstate due largely to Madrid, who wasted little time in scoring his first goal of the match just three minutes in. After having another goal called back just 10 minutes after that for being offsides, Madrid tacked on the insurance strike in the 85th minute to cap his six-point weekend.
With the wins, Madrid helped FGCU get over .500 for the first time this year as the Eagles are now 6-5-1, including the aforementioned six consecutive wins, and boast the only unbeaten record in league action at 4-0 (12 points). The Green and Blue are three points clear of both ETSU and Lipscomb, and the Eagles already have one-goal victories over both teams.
The A-Sun honor is the first for Madrid, who now becomes the third different FGCU player to earn Player of the Week or Co-Player of the Week in the past three weeks. Redshirt junior Henry Penagos (Margate, Fla./American Heritage School of Boca) was tabbed the Player of the Week last Monday, and before that sophomore Felipe DeSousa (Tampa, Fla./Wharton HS) claimed the Player of the Week crown. It is the first time in program history that FGCU has won three consecutive A-Sun Player of the Week awards.
Courtesy of his six-point weekend, Madrid moved into sole possession of second place on FGCU’s points list with nine, two shy of DeSousa. The New Mexico native has four goals and an assist on the campaign, with the quartet of goals tied with Penagos for second most on the roster and just one shy of DeSousa. Madrid attempted eight shots over the course of the two games to move his team-leading total to 37 in that category – 17 more than anyone else.
With the two wins, FGCU continued its dominance of the A-Sun as the Eagles have now run their conference regular-season record to 26-2-2 since the start of the 2010 season. In that span, 90 possible points could have been earned during the regular season, and FGCU has claimed a staggering 80 of them (88.8 percent).
The Green and Blue – which does not have a senior on its roster – returns to the FGCU Soccer Complex on Thursday night (Oct. 17) for its second-to-last home game of the regular season against Mercer. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the Eagles will be looking to extend a 19-game regular-season home A-Sun winning streak dating back to the 2008 campaign.
