Aaron Slusher enters his third season as an assistant coach for the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s soccer team with primary emphasis on Goalkeeping. As a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Slusher also coordinates the program’s workout regime.
In just two seasons with the staff, Slusher has helped the Eagles to a 21-10-3 overall mark, highlighted by a 13-3-2 record and spending several weeks in the national rankings by several media outlets in 2010 (as high as No. 19).
In arguably the program’s most impressive season to date, the 2010 squad finished with a perfect 9-0 conference mark and brought the first ever A-Sun regular season conference championship to the FGCU campus, outscoring their league opposition 26-2. As one of just five schools in the nation to finish with an unblemished conference mark, the Blue and Green landed a program best seven student-athletes on the A-Sun All-Conference teams and the Defensive Player of the Year in goalkeeper Adam Glick.
FGCU’s 2009 campaign was a tremendous stepping stone in the program’s recent success, as it was the first time the Blue and Green had finished with a winning-record, holding an 8-7-1 mark and finishing third in a very close three-way battle for the Atlantic Sun regular season championship. For the efforts on the field, five student athletes were named to A-Sun postseason awards, including second team net-minder Matt Smith.
The coaching staff has also placed a strong emphasis on hard work inside the classroom and in the community. The Eagles have received the NSCAA Team Academic Award in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, including a team GPA of 3.04 for the 2009-10 academic year. Additionally, the Blue and Green have made an effort to help those less fortunate in the community by annually volunteering their time at the local Salvation Army.
Slusher comes to FGCU after a solid playing career at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio. While at Wilmington he was a three-year captain, two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference academic team selection, a first team All-Ohio academic team selection, a three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference Goalkeeper, First Team All-Great Lakes Region Goalkeeper, the Ohio Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, and team Most Valuable Player, among many other accolades.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Slusher received his bachelor’s degree in Sport Management with Wellness Concentration from Wilmington College in May 2009.
