Northwood Ends FGCU Men's Tennis Win Streak

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Northwood (Fla.) ended a five-match win streak for No. 16 Florida Gulf Coast University with a 5-4 win in men’s tennis action at the FGCU Tennis Complex Saturday. Northwood, ranked No. 4 in NAIA play, swept the doubles play and pulled out two singles wins to improve to 5-3. The Eagles, who had posted five consecutive shutout wins, are now 8-2. FGCU seniors Richard Stempnowski (Cape Coral, FL) and senior Jose Pastrello (Limiera, Brazil) lost 8-4 for their first doubles defeat of the season. The tandem is now 9-1 on the year. At the No. 3 doubles position, sophomore Alberto Gutierrez (Bogotá, Columbia) and senior Seth Fogelman (Naples, FL) lost 9-8 to fall to 7-1 in doubles play. Needing to win five of the six singles matches for the win, the Eagles only picked up four singles victories. Stempnowski improved to 9-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 straight set win at No. 1 singles. Junior Juan Carlos Osorio (Quito, Ecuador) was a winner at No. 3 singles, 6-3 and 6-1. Fogelman won at No. 5 singles and freshman Gavin Manders (Warwick, Bermuda) won at No. 6 singles.
