FORT MYERS, Fla. – The third day of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Women’s Championships featured strong quarterfinal play as a Florida Gulf Coast University player advanced to the men’s singles final for the third straight year. Fifth seed Juan Carlos Osorio of FGCU beat teammate Alberto Gutierrez in the quarterfinals (6-4, 6-0) before upending third seed Thomas Hipp of Barry in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, and 6-3, in the semifinals. In each of the past two seasons, former FGCU standout Richard Stempnowski captured the Southeast Region singles title. Osorio will face the winner of Sunday morning’s semifinal match between second seed Sebastian Niedermayer of Eckerd and unseeded Dennis Riegraf of Lynn. Niedermayer disposed of Regnier Azevedo of Lynn in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, and 7-5, in the quarterfinals. Riegraf came back from a set down to upset seventh seed Clifford Giel of Florida Tech in the quarterfinals (0-6, 6-1, and 6-3). In the doubles draw, the top seeded tandem of Hipp and Martin Jensen of Barry advanced to the semifinals with a quarterfinal win over FGCU’s Osorio and Tim Offerman (8-1). They will face the fourth seeded duo of Jan Macko and Azevedo. The other doubles semifinal will match fifth seeded Giel and Keith Kessler of Florida Tech against Barry’s unseeded tandem of Victor Rodriguez and Dirk Benninghaus. Osorio and Offerman advanced to the quarterfinals after a strong 9-8 win over Hector Rincon and Nick Osborne. The singles and doubles consolation matches were cancelled after Friday’s play was shortened due to rain. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the winners advancing to the Oct. 13-16 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships, also to be held at FGCU.
