FORT MYERS, Fla. –The FGCU men’s tennis team picked up two doubles victories on Day One of the FGCU Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Three Oaks Tennis Complex.

“We started the day off strong winning two out of our first four doubles matches, but couldn’t hold the momentum throughout the day,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “These matches are exactly what we need to help us get ready for our dual match season.”

FGCU started well in doubles when senior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS/Jacksonville) and sophomore Lance Lvovsky (Dania,Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) rallied to defeat Daniel Leitner and Christian Kuehne (South Alabama), 8-6. Rock and Lvovsky were down 5-6 in the match, before winning three straight games to pick up the win.

Sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) and freshman Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) also battled from behind to defeat Matias Hatem and Sofiane Chevallier from Georgia State, 8-5. Tsamas and Beiler fell behind 5-2 in the match, before storming back to win six straight games to earn the victory.

“These two teams showed great resiliency in their matches and it is always great to get rewarded with your toughness with a victory,” said Weber.

In singles, freshman Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) fell in the third set against Christian Kuehne (South Alabama), 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3. Bao dropped the first set 6-1, before winning the second set tiebreaker 7-5 but couldn’t overcome an early 3-0 hole in the third set.

Junior Collin Brown (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) also lost in the third set against Ismael Lahlou from Georgia State, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. Brown was able to win the first set 6-4 but dropped the remaining two sets to take the loss.
