Men's Tennis Adds Transfer from National Champion USC
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off a solid first-year at the helm, FGCU men’s tennis head coach C.J. Weber announced the addition of National Champion USC transfer Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada HS/USC), who will join the Eagles beginning this fall.
Vives, who helped USC capture its fourth straight National Championship this past spring, will have three years of eligibility with the Green and Blue.
“Jordi is going to be a great addition to the roster for the upcoming year,” said Weber. “He’s a great kid, good student, and an amazing player. To be able to bring somebody in with his experience will help this program continue to grow and build in the direction that we want it to. I look forward to working with him for the next three years, and seeing how he can contribute to the future successes of FGCU tennis.”
In the spring of 2012, Vives had a 4-1 dual match record with the Trojans, including a 3-1 mark at No. 6 singles. In doubles, Vives was a perfect 2-0 at the No. 3 spot. Highlighting his four individual wins, Vives clinched a match against PAC-12 member Arizona, defeating Sebastian Ionescu, 6-1, 7-5.
A native of Barcelona, Spain, Vives had a successful juniors career playing for CT Salut and RCT Barcelona (RTCB). With RCTB, he won a Spanish doubles junior championship and was a finalist at a Catalonia singles junior tournament. In juniors, Vives defeated five players ranked inside the ATP top 800 and was ranked 1300 in ATP singles and 1200 in ATP doubles, including a Top 100 Spanish ranking.
In the spring of 2012 under Weber’s direction, the Green and Blue doubled their win total from a season ago with seven victories. Freshman Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) became the first Eagle to be honored as the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year and was joined by classmate Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) as the program’s first A-Sun All-Freshmen team selections. FGCU returns five of its six starters in the singles lineup in hopes of a return trip to the A-Sun Championships next season.
