Men’s Tennis Set to Host FGCU Fall Invitational
Thursday, September 27, 2012 | by Patrick Pierson (@pierson_sid)

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After strong performances at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships and the Bedford Cup, the FGCU men’s tennis team will welcome four other in-state programs to campus as it hosts the FGCU Eagles Fall Invitational, beginning on Friday and running through Sunday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

FGCU along with Miami, UCF, FAU and Barry make up the field that will fill a 32-player singles draw and 16-team doubles draw. Play will begin on Friday at 9 a.m. with first round doubles followed by two rounds of singles action.

FGCU will have eight players in the singles draw and four doubles tandems in the 16-team field. Through the first two tournaments, the Green and Blue have a combined 13 singles wins, including a pair over BCS foes, and three doubles triumphs, highlighted by sophomore Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) and senior Colin Brown’s (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) win over a Georgia Tech pairing at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships (SIC).

Sophomore USC transfer Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) advanced to the Round of 16 at the Bedford Cup two weekends ago, picking up his second and third straight-set wins over the year. Vives is 3-2 on the year in singles play and will team with redshirt junior Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) in doubles play. The duo played together at the SIC’s, dropping a hard-fought 8-5 match against Florida’s nationally-ranked tandem of Alford and Diep.

Junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) leads the team with four singles wins (4-2) on the year, advancing to the Round of 16 in both tournaments this fall. Tsamas was involved in one of the most thrilling matches at the Bedford Cup, battling back from a 5-0 deficit in the third set to take the final frame, 7-5, to defeat UNF’s Timo Kranz. Tsamas will be paired for the first time this season with freshman Dylan Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights HS), who opened his collegiate career in style at the Bedford Cup with straight-set win over Miami Jack Murphy.

Oddly enough, Miami’s Murphy will open FGCU’s reigning Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS (FL)) on Friday mid-morning. Bao has faced a difficult schedule in the first two tournaments, scoring no less than three points in a set against opponents from Florida, Florida State, Clemson and Georgia Tech. Bao picked up a first round win at the Bedford Cup with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Stetson’s Erik Halaj.

Brown and Beiler will team up for the second time this season, trying to build off their strong showing at the SICs. Brown and Beiler worked out of the play-in match of the Division II Doubles draw at the SICs, advancing to the Round of 16 with wins over Lipscomb and the aforementioned Georgia Tech. Brown will be in search of his first singles win of the year, while Beiler is 2-2 on the year.

Junior Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./ Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) will see his first singles and doubles action since the opening tournament. At the SICs, Lvovsky went 1-1 in singles and teamed with Bao in doubles. The duo will be back in action together on Friday morning against Samson and Blasco of UCF.
