FORT MYERS, Fla. – Five singles players and two doubles teams advanced through the opening round Friday morning, but it was junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) and sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) that made noise in the afternoon by advancing to the quarterfinals of singles action on their home courts at the FGCU Fall Invitational.

Tsamas and Vives rank one and two on the Green and Blue in singles victories midway through the third tournament of the fall season. It will be the second straight quarterfinals appearance for Vives, who did so at the Bedford Cup, while Tsamas has moved on to the Round of 16 in all three tournaments so far.

“Both Jordi and Dean had a great first day, taking care of business so they can keep themselves fresh heading into Saturday,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “Jordi was very sharp on all fronts, while Dean showed resounding toughness today, overcoming a cramp in his second match to win in three sets.”

FGCU picked up a total of seven singles wins on the day, as the Eagles, UCF and Barry all have two players that will compete in Saturday’s quarterfinal round. In a very balanced and competitive 16-team doubles draw, four of the five teams had two doubles teams advance through the first round.

Vives pushed his singles record to 5-2 on the year, picking up two more straight-set victories to bring his season total to five. In the late morning singles match against FAU’s John Nowak, Vives surrendered just one game, winning 6-1, 6-0. He continued his strong play in the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-4, victory over Matt Gladstone of UCF, who defeated Miami’s Henrique Tsukamoto in two sets.

Tsamas’ first round match was nearly as quick as Vives, as he defeated Robbie Dubuque of FAU, 6-1 and 6-2. Looking for his third straight quarterfinals appearance, Tsamas took the first set against Mario Samson of UCF, 6-3, but dropped the second set, 4-6. Tsamas fought through a cramp at the end of the second set and responded with a match-clinching 6-1 third set victory. Tsamas is now 6-2 on the year in singles play.

Along with Vives and Tsamas first round singles victories, sophomore Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS (FL)), junior Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) and freshman Dylan Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights HS) added to the FGCU win column, as the Eagles went 5-3 in the morning.

After a thrilling 9-8(3) comeback doubles with junior Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./ Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) against UCF’s Samson and Blasco, Bao defeated Miami’s Jack Murphy in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the afternoon. FAU’s Will Neuner ended Bao’s main draw singles run in round two, 7-5 and 6-4.

Echeverry’s first round win saw him drop the first set, 6-1, but the junior was able to dig deep and take the final two sets against Miami’s Mark Schanerman. Echeverry took the final two sets by a 6-4 count to pick up one of just four three-set wins in the opening round. The junior fell in the afternoon to Barry’s Kevin Sielmann.

A week removed from his first collegiate win, Gunning advanced to the second round with a straight-set 6-4, 6-5, victory against Sean Bacha of FAU. Gunning ran into a fresh Jorge Blasco of UCF in the afternoon. Blasco was one of two players to have a bye in the first round.

Pairing up for the second time this season, sophomore Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) and senior Colin Brown (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) defeated Miami’s Schanerman and Tsukamoto combo, 8-5. It is the second win over a BCS opponent for Beiler and Brown this season, as they will face UCF’s Wagner and Aulina on Saturday.
