Men’s Tennis Ends Fall Season at ITA Southeast Regionals
TALLAHASEE, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team closed out an impressive fall campaign on Sunday at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals hosted by Florida State, as sophomore Tianyu Bao’s (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS-FL) run in the consolation bracket came to an end in a hard-fought three set loss.
Coming off back-to-back wins on Saturday, including a straight-set triumph over USF’s Everth Dzib, Bao battled Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rakitt to a 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 heart-breaker in the consolation bracket quarterfinals.
“We started off slow, but we definitely showed some resilience in every match we played,” said Bao. “It feels good that we won seven singles matches, but now we’ve got to work harder for the spring season.”
Bao’s pair of wins was part of seven singles victories accumulated by FGCU over the weekend against the rest of the Southeast Region that featured host Florida State, Georgia, Florida, Georgia Tech, Miami, USF, Florida A&M, North Florida, UCF, FAU, Kennesaw State, Stetson, Georgia State and Georgia Southern.
“Although not everything went our way this weekend, and we certainly had plenty of challenges, this was a great finishing weekend for us as a team,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “There were plenty of learning opportunities and as long as we learn and move forward, we’ll be a better team because of this tournament.”
FGCU will go into its championship spring season with plenty of momentum from a strong fall. Sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC), a transfer from National Champion USC, accumulated an 8-4 singles record, taking home the title at the FGCU Fall Classic. The duo of Bao and junior Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./ Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) also claimed a title this fall, winning the FGCU Fall Classic.
Junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) is right behind Vives with seven singles wins (7-5), advancing to the Round of 16 at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, the Bedford Cup and FGCU Fall Classic.
Over its competitive four-tournament fall schedule, FGCU had seven singles wins over BCS foes and three doubles victories against BCS tandems. All nine players that took part in a tournament this fall for FGCU had at least one singles win.
FGCU’s spring schedule will be released by the end of October. Fans can get updates on FGCU men’s tennis on twitter by following @FGCU_MTEN.
