Strong Singles Play Leads @FGCU_MTEN to 4-3 Win Over Florida A&M
Lvovsky clinches match-winning point at No. 4 singles
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In a back-and-forth match that saw the scored tied three times, junior Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the third set at No. 4 singles to take home the match-clinching point in the FGCU men’s tennis team’s dramatic 4-3 win over Florida A&M on Monday.
After dropping the doubles point, FGCU was forced to take four of the six singles match in order to come away with its first win of the season and did just that, as junior Dean Tsamas Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS), junior Gabe Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio), sophomore Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) and Lvovsky were all victorious.
The match was the Green and Blue’s third in as many days, as the Eagles improved to 1-2 after also facing No. 32 FSU and No. 73 UAB this weekend.
“We came out flat in doubles and lost that point very quickly. Fortunately, we came out firing in singles, and our toughness helped us win this match,” said head coach C.J. Weber.
With the score tied 3-3, Lvovsky’s match with Takura Happy was the last match left on the courts. Lvovsky dropped the first set, 6-3, but rallied right back with a commanding 6-1 victory in the second set. Despite having all the momentum after the second set, Lvovsky fell behind 4-0 in the third and deciding set, but fought back with seven of the last eight games to secure FGCU’s hard-fought first win of the year.
“I had to dig deep to find the will to come back in my match,” said Lvovsky following his singles victory. “This match is an indicator of the toughness of our team. As the season goes on, we will continue to show our resilience in these types of situations.”
FGCU never trailed after losing the doubles point, as Beiler quickly took care of Zack Evenden at No. 5 singles, capping his second straight win of the three-match weekend with his first collegiate 6-0 set. Tsamas tied the match at 2-2 with a straight-set victory at the No. 2 spot against Chidi Gabriel, 7-6(4) and 6-2.
Echeverry gave FGCU its first lead of the match at 3-2 when he finished off an up-and-down win over Temuera Asafu-Adjaye at No. 6 singles with a 6-0 third set. Echeverry took the first set by a 6-1 margin, but was forced to play a third set after losing 6-2.
FGCU will return to action with a two-game home weekend that starts on Friday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. against Troy. The Eagles will cap the weekend with a 6 p.m. night match against SMU on Saturday, Feb. 2.
