TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Highlighted by four singles and doubles wins, the FGCU men's tennis team completed the first step of the fall season as day one of the Bedford Cup comes to an end in Florida’s capital city Thursday.

“Today was a very challenging day for us as a team, which is a great thing,” head coach C.J. Weber said. “There is a lot for us to learn from these opening rounds, but I’m very proud of how our guys supported each other.”

Representing the Eagles in Friday's singles Round of 16 for the second-consecutive year are senior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) and tournament No. 1 seed Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC).

Earlier Thursday, Tsamas shut out Nubian Jean-Charles of Florida A&M, 6-0, 6-0, in the opening round, and Zach Goldberg of UCF, 7-6, 6-3, in the second round. Vives, who started off the day with a bye, breezed into the Round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over UCF’s Arjun Watane.

“I think today was a good day for me, I played good tennis,” Vives said. “As a team we had really good support for each other. Even though a couple matches didn’t go our way I feel that my teammates learned a lot from today.”

Junior Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) advanced to the second round after swiftly beating John Nowak of FAU 6-2, 6-2 early Thursday morning. In the Round of 32 Bao put up a hard fight in three sets against UCF’s Chris Barrus, but ultimately fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In Thursday morning’s Round of 62, the remaining five Eagles showed their opponents a good fight but ultimately fell short.

The team’s lone true freshman, Adrian Reid (Lima, Peru/Altair School), began his collegiate career with a tough matchup against tournament No. 5 seed Grayson Goldin of FSU, who took the contest 6-1, 6-3. Redshirt freshman Chris Perrigan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay HS) played a close first set, but came up short in falling to Stetson’s Laurynas Antropikas 7-5, 6-1. The team’s other newcomer, Tulsa transfer Lucas Vaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Fleming/Tulsa), went three sets with Reece Acree of UCF, but couldn’t clinch the match, falling 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

Senior Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) and Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) battled hard in their first-round matches but came up short. Lvovsky fought hard but was outplayed by Florida A&M’s Admire Mushonga, who advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win, while Echeverry faced UNF’s Yannick Zurn, who claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

In doubles play, the eighth-seeded pair of Vives and Vaz took to the court for the first time together, effortlessly beating UCF’s Chris Barrus and Reece Acree, 8-3, to secure a spot in tomorrow’s Round of 16. Joining the two Vs in tomorrow’s action are Echeverry and Reid, who will face Stetson’s Hans Adrian Risend and Nathan Debut.

“Jordi and Lucas played some great doubles against a very solid team today,” Weber added. “Gabe and Adrian had a walkover in the firstround, so I know they are anticipating a very intense first match together tomorrow.”

Coming up short in doubles play were Perrigan and Bao, who fell to Stetson’s Chester Espie and Simon Julin, 8-5, and Tsamas and Lvovsky who played a great match but fell 8-6 to Inaki Espindola and Riaan Du Toit from UCF.

In Friday’s Round of 16 singles draw, teammates Vives and Tsamas will face off for a spot in the quarterfinals. Also, in the doubles Round of 16 Vives and Vaz will take on a pair from Bethune-Cookman at 2:00 p.m., while Reid and Echeverry will face a duo from Stetson also at 2:00 p.m.

“I’m looking forward to Dean and Jordi’s matchup tomorrow,” Weber continued, “as I’m sure they will be looking to fight hard against each other in the main draw.”
