Vives serves in singles match at Bedford Cup

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – As day three of the Bedford Cup began in The Sunshine State’s Capital junior Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) prepared to take to the baseline for his singles Quaterfinals match, making him the all-time furthest-advancing FGCU player in the tournament filled with Florida’s best.

Facing No. 5 seed Grayson Goldin of FSU, who beat Adrian Reid (Lima, Peru/Altair School) 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, Vives entered the match knowing he’d have to play to his best ability if he wanted to secure a spot in the Semifinals. After a close battle between skilled players, Goldin claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Vives, leading to FGCU’s dismissal from the main singles draw.

“I’m disappointed in how I played today,” said Vives. “But tennis is sometimes like that. There is nothing else I can do except work harder to get better as a player. As a team I feel that the tournament was great for some of us to learn and get better. It’s just the beginning, we’ll be back, and we’ll be stronger.”

Racking up a victory for the Green and Blue today was junior Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) beating Gerald Nickerson of Florida Atlantic 6-0, 6-1 in his singles consolation match.

“It was a challenging tournament for us,” Bao said. “I think we competed well and represented ourselves very well. I know all the guys are looking forward to getting back on the practice court and begin preparing for our next tournament.”

“The Bedford Cup was a real tough tournament this weekend,” head coach C.J. Weber said. “The competition was high and I’m glad we got to challenge ourselves like this so early in the season. We are looking forward to getting back out on the practice courts to get ready for Georgia Southern next weekend.”

The Eagles will return to their fall tour Oct. 4-6 as they travel to Statesboro, Ga. for the Georgia Southern Championships
