STATESBORO, Ga. – The FGCU men’s tennis team completed the first day of competition at the Georgia Southern Championships Friday by posting four singles victories, led by a perfect 2-0 performance from Gabe Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio).

Echeverry, who doubled his win total on Friday from last weekend’s season-opening tournament, began his day at 10:30 in morning and promptly dropped the first set, 6-1. However, he rebounded to rattle off consecutive 6-2, 6-2 victories over Luca Cerin of Armstrong Atlantic State University to advance to the next round. Once there, the senior quickly disposed of Kennesaw State’s David Durham in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

With the pair of wins, Echeverry finds himself in the seminfinals of the winners bracket. He will meet Pablo Tellez from UNF on Saturday afternoon at 2 for the right to play for the bracket championship.

The other two Eagles to pick up wins on Friday were Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) and Adrian Reid (Lima, Peru/Altair School). Lvovsky, the lone FGCU player in the “A” bracket, quickly defeated Georgia Southern’s Daniel Rush, 6-4, 6-2, to move on to the quarterfinals later in the afternoon. Once there, the senior fell to FAU’s Robert Dubuque, 6-3, 6-3, and will resume singles action Saturday by serving it up with UNF’s Caio Gomes at 3:30 p.m.

As for Reid, the freshman dropped his first match of the morning, 6-4, 6-3, to Georgia Southern’s Marco Osorio before regrouping with a straight-set triumph over Osorio’s teammate, Robbie Thompson, 6-2, 6-2, Friday afternoon. Reid advances in the consolation bracket to face Stefan Burnett of FAU Saturday afternoon at 3.

The other FGCU member in action Friday was Chris Perrigan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay HS), who unfortunately dropped both of his matches. Perrigan fell to Tellez in his first match of the day, 6-4, 6-4, and then had a lengthy battle in his second tilt. After losing the first set, 6-2, Perrigan breezed to a second-set win, 6-1, before ultimately succumbing to FAU’s Trey Nickerson in the final set, 11-9. Perrigan returns to the singles court Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Georgia Southern’s Kyle Hoffman.

Doubles action will commence Saturday as the players have a full slate of action ahead of them. Perrigan and Lvovsky have been paired together and begin their day at 10:15 a.m. against the Georgia Southern duo of Rush and Christian Kerrigan. The two will then turn around and face Kennesaw State’s Simon Pritchard and Jake Bouchillon at approximately 11:30 before taking on their singles opponents in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Reid and Echeverry will battle Cerin and Ignacio Hernandez from Armstrong Atlantic at 9 a.m. and then Osorio and Nico De Groof from Georgia Southern at approximately 10:30.
