Gabe Echeverry wins singles draw at Georgia Southern Championships

STATESBORO, Ga. – As the sun began to set over the courts in south Georgia, the Georgia Southern Championships came to a close, highlighted by FGCU men’s tennis senior Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) being crowned champion of the white singles draw after a terrific two-set finals match.

Facing Armstrong Atlantic’s Ignacio Hernandez, Echeverry took to the court Sunday morning to play in the biggest match any Eagle has seen this fall season. After claiming the first set, 6-3, Echeverry continued to build momentum as he took the second set with the same score. On his way to becoming the last man standing, Echeverry outscored his opponents 49 games to 24, playing a total of nine sets over the four matches.

After suffering a season-ending ACL injury in the spring of 2012, Echeverry missed the fall 2012 tour as he spent time rebuilding his strength, only making today’s victory that much sweeter.

“I could not be more proud,” head coach CJ Weber said. “I’m so happy for Gabe in this moment! He has overcome so much to get to this point. He was challenged in every way he needed to be, and he overcame all weekend. It’s been great to get such a tangible reward from all his hard work since returning from his ACL injury a year-and-a-half ago.”

Before playing in the match for tournament glory, Echeverry and Adrian Reid (Lima, Peru/Altair Shcool) won their doubles match over Daniel Rush and Christian Kerrigan of Georgia Southern, 8-6.

Also representing FGCU in the winners circle with success in singles consolation matches were Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) with a beautiful 6-1, 6-0 victory over GSU’s Rafael Racy, and Chris Perrigan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay HS) who emerged from a close battle with Rush, 7-6, 6-3.

At the end of the weekend, the Green and Blue – who only traveled four players – tallied nine singles victories and three doubles wins over the course of the three-day tournament.

The Eagles will continue their fall slate Oct. 11-15 as they head to Atlanta for ITA Southeast Regionals. For up-to-date information on the program, be sure to follow @FGCU_MTEN on Twitter.
