@FGCU_MTEN Falls 6-1 at No. 74 USF
TAMPA – Playing on the road for the third time this season, the FGCU men’s tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 74 USF Saturday afternoon in Tampa. The Eagles move to 0-4 on the season while USF improves to 2-0.
“USF really took us today,” head coach CJ Weber said. “We had some good opportunities in doubles at positions two and three, but we were unable to bring that momentum with us into singles play. USF competed with a lot of energy and they were rewarded for it. We have to rebound mentally in order to prepare for Bethune-Cookman tomorrow.”
Earning a point for the Green and Blue while continuing the nation’s longest win streak was Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) with his 13th-straight victory coming after a three-set battle against USF’s Oliver Pramming. After winning a tiebreaking first set 6-5 (3), Vives fell behind in the second leading to a 4-6 loss. With the match knotted at one set a piece, the two began play of the 10-point tiebreak where Vives posted a 10-5 win to clinch the match.
The Eagles fell to a disadvantage early as USF quickly won two doubles matches to begin singles play with a 1-0 lead. Ranked 16th in the ITA Pramming and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz of USF showed their national mark is well deserved as they cruised to a 6-1 win over Vives and Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS). Keeping the three doubles match competitively close were Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) and Lucas Vaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Fleming/Tulsa) but the Bulls win in the No. 2 slot gave them the doubles point forcing the No. 3 match to retire with the Eagles leading 5-4.
The Bulls kept their momentum going throughout singles play as they quickly took three matches in straight sets to clinch the contest at 4-0.
The Green and Blue return to The Nest tomorrow to face Bethune-Cookman at 1 p.m. Joining fans to cheer on the Eagles in Sunday’s match is ATP No. 22 Kevin Anderson. As always admission is free.
