@FGCU_MTEN Tops Lipscomb, 5-2, for Fifth Atlantic Sun Win
NASHVILLE – Riding a four-match unbeaten streak, the FGCU men’s tennis team picked up its fifth win in the Atlantic Sun conference, beating Lipscomb, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in Music City.
The Eagles improve to 10-9 (5-2 A-Sun) on the season, while the Bisons fall to 2-12 (1-5 A-Sun).
“Overall today was a good win for the team,” head coach CJ Weber said. “After starting slow in the beginning of doubles, I am proud of the way the guys were able to turn it around and win us the crucial point. I am looking forward to concluding the regular season next weekend as we host Stetson and honor our three seniors. It is going to be another challenging match, but we’re looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd one last time this season!”
To begin the day FGCU jumped to an early lead after claiming all three of the doubles matches for a 1-0 advantage. Picking up a quick win in the No. 3 slot were partners Lucas Vaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Fleming/Tulsa) and Adrian Reid (Lima/Peru/Altair School), laying an 8-5 defeat on Lipscomb’s David Salazar and Nacor Ibanez. In the second position Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) and Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) took an 8-6 victory from Daniel Hernandez and Rob Mitchell after Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) and Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) beat Miguel Cortez and Stuart Tierney, with the same score, in the one slot.
In singles play, the Eagles went on to collect four more points from wins in six contests.
Finishing first was Reid with a win in the No. 6 slot. Facing Nacor Ibanez, the freshman escaped the first set with a 6-4 win, before controlling play in the second, taking it 6-1.
Remaining unbeaten in A-Sun play, with a 7-0 record, was No. 62 Vives, topping Rob Mitchell at No. 1. In a close opening set, Vives came out on the up end of a tiebreak, 7-6 (3), before turning things around in the second, winning it 6-3.
Picking up a victory in the second position was Bao, finding triumph over David Salazar in three sets. After claiming the first set, 6-2, Bao dropped the second, 1-6. Remaining focused Bao was able to regain control of the match and win the final set at the 6-4 mark.
The final win was the doing of Lvovsky, playing No. 4. In a close match against Lipscomb’s Miguel Cortez, Lvovsky won the first set, 6-4, and the second, 7-5.
