Stempanowski Wins Regional Semifinal Match
CLINTON, S.C. — The third day of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Men’s Tennis Fall Championships, held on the campus of Presbyterian College, had it’s share of upsets as the championship matches were set for tomorrow’s final day of action.
In the doubles main draw, host Presbyterian College’s Kshitij Dwivedi and Paul Ratchford defeated the duo of Sergio Espinosa and Carlos Garcia of Tusculum College 8-4 to advance to the championship match. Dwivedi and Ratchford will meet the second seeded team of Eduardo Morones and Regnier Azevedo of Lynn University who defeated the fourth seed Thomas Hipp and Sebastian Losavio of Barry University 9-7. The doubles championship match is set for 9:00 am.
In the singles main draw, the 11th seed Matt Umbers of Rollins College defeated teammate David Tafur (0-6, 7-5, 6-4) in the semifinals and then knocked off the third seed, Sebastian Niedermayer of Eckerd College 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, to advance to the finals. Umbers will meet the #2 seed Richard Stempnowski of Florida Gulf Coast University who defeated the fifth seed Sebastian Losavio of Barry University (6-1, 6-2) in the quarterfinals and moved past Jonathan Gomez of Rollins in the semifinals 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the championship match. Umbers and Stempnowski will meet at 9:00 am in the finals.
In the singles consolation bracket, Manuel Lauter of Barry University advanced to tomorrow’s finals after defeating Tusculum’s Roberto Robles 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 in the semifinals. Lauter will meet Florida Gulf Coast University’s Alberto Guiterrez who defeated Miles Moriarty 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 in the other semifinal matchup.
Tomorrow’s singles consolation championship match is set for 8:30 am.
