Stempnowski Falls In ITA National Quarterfinals

FORT MYERS, Fla – Senior Richard Stempnowski lost his quarterfinal singles match of the ITA National Small College Championships held at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Thursday. Stempnowski fell to Joe Epkey of Southern Indiana in a three-set, 2-½ hour match. Epkey won the first set 6-1, but Stempnowski rallied to win the second 7-5 before dropping the deciding third set 7-6 with the tiebreaker at 7-3. It was the first loss in five matches this fall for Stempnowski, who had won 13 straight dating back to last spring. His career record at FGCU now stands at 46-13. Epkey improved to 12-2 this fall and advanced into the Division II semi-finals against No.2 seed Eduardo Rincon of Valdosta State. Stempnowski will face Peter Veselosky of Dowling in a consolation bracket match on Friday morning at 8 a.m. The winners of the Division II, Division III, NAIA and Junior College finals on Saturday will face off in the Super Bowl on Sunday. The tournament continues through Sunday at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The matches are free and open to the public.
