Stempnowski Finishes Sixth at ITA National Championships

FORT MYERS, Fla – Senior Richard Stempnowski finished sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Division II Championships completed at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday. Stempnowski went 1-2 during the first three days of the tournament. After dropping a grueling three-set, 2 ½ hour match to eventual runner-up Joe Epkey of Southern Indiana on Thursday, Stempnowski rallied for a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Peter Veslosky of Dowling College in a consolation match. Stefan Dumitrescu of South Carolina-Upstate beat him 6-3,6-4 in the fifth-place match on Saturday. Stempnowski finished the fall season with a record of 5-2. Top-seed Dante Cipulli of Southwest Baptist beat Epkey 6-0, 6-2 to win the Division II title and advance to the Super Bowl of Small College Tennis on Sunday at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The winners of the Division II, Division III, NAIA and Junior College men’s singles brackets will square off for a berth in the ITA National Intercollegiate Championships, a Division I event scheduled for November. FGCU has played host to all four divisions of ITA small college tennis this weekend. Over 200 athletes from 30 states have been represented in the tournament.
