FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s and women’s tennis teams will host the Florida Collegiate One-on-One Doubles tournament at the FGCU Tennis Complex from September 9-11. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will showcase seven teams. Competing in the men’s bracket along with host FGCU will be the University of Central Florida, University of Miami, Florida Southern, Florida Tech, Palm Beach Atlantic and Embry-Riddle. The women’s tournament includes Texas Tech, Florida Southern, Florida Tech, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic, Embry-Riddle and FGCU. One-on-One doubles is a half-court, serve and volley competition. Players alternate points from the deuce court to the ad court. All points are played crosscourt with the alley included and all players must serve and volley on both the first and second serves. A new concept in tennis, the One-on-One Doubles Championships were developed by former Clemson, Harvard and Central Florida coach Ed Krass, who is now in his 17th year as director of the College Tennis Academy in Brandon. FGCU men’s and women’s head coach J. Webb Horton thinks the event will help prepare his teams for the upcoming season. “We hope this tournament shows our players a way to improve their doubles play that is both fun and practical”, said Horton, who enters his fifth season with the men and first as interim coach of the women. “This event will help with improving our net play and half-volleys. I see this type of event growing in popularity not only in the college ranks, but also in senior tennis.” Play begins Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. The event can be seen by digital cable subscribers nationwide who have access through their cable company to Fox College Sports (FCS).
