Osorio Advances in One-on-One Doubles Tournament
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Juan Carlos Osorio advanced to the quarterfinals of the Florida Collegiate Tennis One-on-One Doubles tennis championships at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Friday.
The second-seeded Osorio (Quito, Ecuador) knocked off Diego Quiros of Florida Tech, 8-5, to advance in this inaugural event. One One-on-One doubles is a half-court, serve and volley competition. Players alternate points from the deuce court to the ad court. The eight-game set requires all points to be played crosscourt with the alley included, and players must serve and volley on both the first and second serves. Players from the University of Central Florida, University of Miami, Florida Southern, Florida Tech, and Embry-Riddle competed with host FGCU in the event.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Brock Sakey of Central Florida, Adam Flintoff and Milas Kopricova of Florida Southern, Mislav Hizak, Tomaki Yasuda and Evan Specht of Embry-Riddle, and top-seed Vivek Subramanian of Miami. Saturday’s play begins at 1:30 p.m.
In traditional singles play, eight second round matches are scheduled to begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Osorio is joined in the second round by FGCU teammates Tim Offerman (Hamburg, Germany), and Alberto Gutierrez (Bogota, Columbia).
Four Eagles players are in the semifinals of the consolation bracket in the One-on-One Doubles tournament. Offerman and Gutierrez are joined by Gavin Manders (Warwick, Bermuda) and Chris Caswell (Lakeland, Fla.)
Admission is free to all matches.
