No. 19 Men's Tennis Falls to No. 2 Ouachita Baptist
TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 19 Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis team fell to No. 2 Ouachita Baptist University 5-2 in a match played at the University of South Florida on Wednesday afternoon.
It was the second time in three days that the Eagles have met one of the top ranked teams in Division II tennis. FGCU fell to No. 1 Drury University on Monday. The Eagles (12-3) have suffered all three defeats at the hands of teams ranked in the national top-six.
The Eagles led 2-1 after doubles play, but Ouachita Baptist bounced back to win the first four singles matches for the win. Two singles matches went unfinished.
Seniors Juan Carlos Osorio (Quito, Ecuador) and Tim Offerman (Hamburg, Germany) picked up the first FGCU point with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, improving to 12-2 this spring. Freshman Danny Lee (Naples, Fla.) and Edson Lima (Brasilia, Brazil) improved to 13-2 on the year with a victory at No. 3 doubles.
Ouachita picked up four straight wins at No. 2 through No. 5 singles. Osorio led in the third set of his match with Ondra Vana while Lima was tied in the third set against Vasek Stverka.
FGCU will face its third straight top-10 ranked opponent when it travels to the No. 9 Armstrong Atlantic State University on Saturday at 10 a.m.
