FORT MYERS, Fla. – No. 18 Eckerd College won its four straight match with a 7-2 win Monday afternoon over No. 9 Florida Gulf Coast University in men’s tennis action at the Turley Athletic Complex. In a rematch of last spring first-round NCAA match-up, the Tritons swept the three double matches and the first four singles matches for the easy win. Eckerd enters its conference tournament with a 17-3 record while FGCU closes out its regular season with a 16-5 mark. The Tritons’ top-doubles team of Elmar Koenig and Javier Romero-Barrio, ranked second in Division II, set the tone with a convincing 8-3 win over 10th-ranked Juan Carlos Osorio (Quito, Ecuador) and Tim Offerman (Hamburg, Germany) of FGCU. Sebastian Niedermayer and Nikola Vujovic of Eckerd won at No. 2 doubles over Alberto Gutierrez (Bogotá, Columbia) and Gavin Manders (Warwick, Bermuda) while Sanjar Shodiev and David Lopez upended FGCU’s No. 3 tandem of Danny Lee (Naples, Fla.) and Edson Lima (Brasilia, Brazil). Lee picked up a three-set win over Romero-Barrio at No. 5 singles while Lima improved to 18-0 with a straight sets win over Lopez at No. 6 for the only Eagles victories. The Eagles likely have secured one of the eight positions in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region championship tournament scheduled for campus sites beginning May 5.
