FGCU Men's Tennis Receives NCAA Tournament Bid

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis team has been selected to the 2006 NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championships for the second straight year. The first and second round tournaments will be conducted May 4-6, with the winner of each first and second round tournament advancing to the finals in Kansas City, Missouri on May 10-13.
Lynn University, the second ranked Southeast Region team will host the first and second round matches for FGCU. The No. 3 Eagles will play No. 6 Florida Southern in the first round. If FGCU defeats Florida Southern they will play the second seed, Lynn. Lynn University received a bye in the first round of play.
FGCU is ranked No. 9 in the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Their first round opponent, Florida Southern is No. 13 and the possible second round foe, Lynn, is at No. 5.
The Eagles defeated Florida Southern, 5-4, in their only match this season. No. 1 seed, senior Juan Carlos Osorio (Quito, Ecuador) won his match while the Eagles No. 5 and 6 seeds were also victorious. Osorio teamed up with fellow senior, Tim Offerman (Hamburg, Germany) to pick up a win at the No.1 seed doubles play. FGCU was also able to pick up a win at the No. 3 doubles. Freshmen Edson Lima (Brasilia, Brazil) and Danny Lee (Naples, Fla.) won their match 8-6.
FGCU lost a tough match to Lynn earlier this year. Lynn took the match by a score of 6-3. Osorio and Lima were the only Eagles to win their singles matches. Osorio and Offerman were successful in No.1 doubles play.
Sixteen conferences received an automatic bid into the 64-team field. FGCU received an at-large bid. In the 2005 championships, West Florida defeated the University of North Florida, 5-0, for its second consecutive championship title. The Eagles defeated Eckerd, 5-1, in the first round last year. They lost 5-3 to Barry University in the NCAA Southeast Region Finals.
