BOCA RATON, Fla. - The sixth-ranked Lynn University men's tennis team defeated No. 13 Florida Gulf Coast 5-0 on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Fighting Knights pick up their fourth straight 5-0 victory and a berth in the Round of 16 at the NCAA National Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla. next week.
Lynn and the Eagles battled through three hard-fought doubles matches to begin things off. The Knights struck first as the freshman tandem of Axel Joachim and Tomas Racak defeated Alberto Gutierrez and Brad Henderson 8-4 in the third position to take the early lead. Dennis Riegraf and Denis Reinert would add another point soon after, claiming an 8-5 decision in the second spot over FGCU's Alex Gjesten and Mikkel Muller.
Coming down to the wire at the top position, the fighting Knights completed their doubles sweep as the 13th ranked duo of Julien Carsuzaa and Lorenzo Cava defeated Brenton Bacon and Danny Lee 9-8(8-6) in a tiebreaker.
The Knights used their added confidence of a 3-0 lead to attack the Eagles right out of the gate. With four players ranked in the ITA top-50, Lynn quickly claimed its pair of singles points for the sweep and second consecutive regional championship. All but on LU player was up at least a set when the match ended.
Earning the singles points were No. 10 Carsuzaa in a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Gutierrez in the second position and No. 46 Reinert with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Muller in the fourth spot.
Second-ranked Cava was well on his way to winning with a 6-4, 3-0 lead over No. 12 Bacon in the top position while No. 11 Riegraf was near victory up 6-4, 3-2 over Gjesten in the third spot.
Other unfinished matches included Racak up 6-4, 2-4 over Edson Lima in the fifth position and Joachim down 6-7(4-7), 0-5 to Lee in the sixth spot.
