FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis coach J. Webb Horton has announced his team’s 2008-09 schedule. The Eagles will participate in three fall tournaments beginning with the USF Fall Invitational, which is September 26-28. Following that, the Eagles will hold their first ever Alumni Match, pitting some former FGCU tennis stars against the current Eagles. That event will take place October 5th at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Eagles will then play in the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational hosted by Rollins October 10-12, and then conclude the fall portion of the schedule in Orlando at the UCF Invitational October 31-September 2.
In the spring FGCU will play 17 matches, 10 of which will be played at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The spring season starts January 7th with a home match against Indiana. January 9-11 the Eagles will head to Jacksonville, FL for the UNF Invitational tournament. The Eagles then head back to Orlando to take on UCF on January 24. February’s lone match comes at home against Florida Atlantic on February 20.
March will be a busy month for the Eagles as they will play 10 matches that month, including home matches with conference foes Lipscomb and Belmont. FGCU will be on the road to take on UNF, Jacksonville, Campbell, Mercer, and Kennesaw State, all in March. In April, USC Upstate and ETSU will each visit Fort Myers to take on the Eagles. ETSU is the defending Atlantic Sun conference champions and has not lost an A-Sun conference match in the last five years.
The conference schedule wraps up with a road match against conference runner-up Stetson on April 7th. The final opponent of the season will be DePaul, who will make a visit to Fort Myers on April 15th. Last season the Eagles finished 8th in the Atlantic Sun with a 4-6 record, while going 10-9 overall.
