FORT MYERS, Fla. – To serve up the 2011 championship season, the FGCU men’s tennis team is set to travel to Tampa, Fla. for a pair of matches over the weekend. The Eagles will face off against host USF on Saturday afternoon and return to the courts on Sunday to challenge FAMU, with both days’ slated to begin at 1 p.m.
Seven FGCU student-athletes will compete in the pair of weekend competitions including seniors Steve Binninger (St. Augustine, Fla./Saint Joseph Academy), Carlo Checchia (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ceteb/Coastal Carolina University) and Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania Beach, Fla./Keystone HS/Wingate University), junior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Jacksonville University), sophomores Collin Brown (Tallahassee, Fla./Florida State University School) and Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Columbia/Gimnasio Calibio), as well as, freshman Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS).
Hosting the FGCU Spring Tournament on January 8-9, the Eagles used the two-day event as an exhibition to prepare for the start of the spring season. FGCU battled against some strong competition, but were unable to come away with a singles victory on either day. The doubles tandem of Rock and Tsamas was able to defeat the pair of Dimitrije Tasic and Travis Neilson of Indiana, 8-3.
