FORT MYERS, Fla. – Following a tough set of matches last weekend, the FGCU men’s team will look to get back on track as they travel to Orlando, Fla. for another pair of dual matches. The Eagles will square off against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at 2 p.m. and resume play on Sunday by competing with host UCF at 9 a.m.
“We have another pair of strong opponents to compete against this weekend,” said head coach J. Webb Horton. “Bethune-Cookman always has a sound program and UCF is an annual contender in Conference USA. We look forward to quality matches and some positive results as both individuals and as a team.”
Seven FGCU student-athletes will compete in the pair of weekend competitions including seniors Steve Binninger (St. Augustine, Fla./Saint Joseph Academy), Carlo Checchia (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ceteb/Coastal Carolina University) and Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania Beach, Fla./Keystone HS/Wingate University), junior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Jacksonville University), sophomores Collin Brown (Tallahassee, Fla./Florida State University School) and Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Columbia/Gimnasio Calibio), as well as, freshman Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS).
Competing in a pair of duals in Tampa last weekend, the Eagles fell to a very strong USF squad, 7-0, and were also defeated by FAMU, 6-1. Echeverry was able to come away with a victory over FAMU’s Michael Moore, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 10-7, in No. 4 singles action on Sunday.
