FORT MYERS, Fla. – Traveling to DeLand, Fla. for its Atlantic Sun Conference opener, the FGCU men’s tennis team is set to compete against Stetson on Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. The Eagles will stay on the road for a make-up match with UCF in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday, also at 10 a.m.
FGCU comes into the Stetson match holding a 0-3 record, while the Hatters are 8-2 and are coming off a 4-3 loss against UCF on Thursday (Feb. 24).
The Eagles' match with UCF was originally scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 6, but rain in the Orlando area forced the schools to postpone the match. The Knights own a 4-4 record heading into their Saturday meeting with FAU.
Competing for the Eagles will be seniors Steve Binninger (St. Augustine, Fla./Saint Joseph Academy), Carlo Checchia (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ceteb/Coastal Carolina University) and Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania Beach, Fla./Keystone HS/Wingate University), junior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Jacksonville University), sophomores Collin Brown (Tallahassee, Fla./Florida State University School) and Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Columbia/Gimnasio Calibio), as well as, freshman Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS).
The Eagles have gotten off to a tough start this spring, coming up short in three dual matches to open the year. FGCU fell to USF, 7-0, in the season opener (Jan. 29) and then to FAMU (Jan. 30), 6-1, the following day, both in Orlando, Fla. In the most recent outing, the Blue and Green played well against visiting FAU, but a couple of three-set losses resulted in FGCU coming out on the wrong side of a 6-1 outcome.
Stetson opened the spring on a seven-match winning streak, but has dropped two of its last three contests. The Eagles are 0-3 all-time against the Hatters.
Results and recaps from both competitions will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com following each day’s play.
