FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team earned its second victory in as many days with a 6-1 defeat of SIU Edwardsville on Monday at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Eagles dropped the opening doubles point but responded by winning each of the six singles matches on the afternoon.
FGCU upped its record to 2-7 (0-3 A-Sun) on the spring season, while SIU Edwardsville fell to 0-6 this spring.
“We started out a little slow today and dropped the doubles point, but the team rallied back in singles to win all six points,” said head coach J. Webb Horton. “SIUE is a very solid opponent and we showed how mentally and physically tough we are. We have played three tough opponents over the past three days, and we will look to carry this momentum over to the Georgia Southern match.”
The Eagles fell in the opening doubles action, dropping two of the three matches. For the second consecutive contest, FGCU’s pair of junior Matt Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Jacksonville University) and sophomore Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) grabbed the lone doubles victory in the No. 2 spot, this time defeating SIUE’s Morten Christensen and Michael Chamberlin, 8-3. In a close No. 3 match, the Eagle duo of sophomore Collin Brown (Tallahassee, Fla./Florida State University School) and senior Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania Beach, Fla./Keystone HS/Wingate University) fell to the Cougar pair of Devan Faulkenberg and Ryan Vogt, 9-8 (5).
In singles action the Eagles showed their dominance, earning victories in each of the six contests. Echeverry earned the No. 1 singles win over Paulo Gonzalez, 7-5, 6-3, and Rock followed with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Justin Spicer in the No. 2 spot. Playing No. 3, senior Steve Binninger (St. Augustine, Fla./Saint Joseph Academy) turned away Christensen, 7-6 (4), 6-2, and classmate Carlo Checchia (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ceteb/Coastal Carolina University) recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chamberlin in No. 4 singles. Rounding out the singles rout, freshman Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) trumped Jacob Tanulanond, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5 and Lvovsky notched a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ryan Vogt in the No. 6 position.
