Men’s Tennis Earns ITA Academic Honors

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team has received the 2011 All-Academic Team award by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), while Steve Binninger (St. Augustine, Fla./Saint Joseph Academy) and Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) received the ITA Scholar-Athlete honor.

The Eagles are receiving the accolade for the first time in school history and are one of five Atlantic Sun teams to be honored. To receive the ITA All-Academic Team award, the program must carry a team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.20 or higher (on a 4.00 scale). The Scholar-Athlete award is earned by varsity letter winners who carry a GPA of at least 3.50 and have been at their present school for a minimum of two semesters.

Rising senior Steve Binninger (St. Augustine, Fla./Saint Joseph Academy) earned his second career ITA Scholar-Athlete award after posting a 3.80 GPA in the spring. Rising junior Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) earned his first ITA Scholar-Athlete award for his team-leading 3.87 GPA.

The FGCU men’s tennis team is returning six players and welcomes three newcomers to the 2011-12 team.
