FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team (0-2) is set to compete in two dual matches this weekend. The Eagles will square off against Georgia Southern on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and continue with a matchup with Bethune-Cookman at 1 p.m. on Sunday, both at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
“The team is ready for two more competitive matches this weekend,” said first-year head coach C.J. Weber. “This will help our team prepare for conference season as we hope to continue improving on our results from last weekend.”
The Eagles lost two tough matches last weekend against SMU, 6-1, and FAMU, 4-3, at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Junior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) went 2-0 at No. 4 singles to lead the Green and Blue. Sophomores Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) and Lance Lvovsky (Dania,Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) each picked up a victory in singles against FAMU.
Georgia Southern comes into the match with a 1-1 record after defeating Mercer, 5-2, last weekend in Statesboro, Ga. The other Eagles lost their second match to No. 71 North Florida, 6-1, on Jan. 28. Junior Matthijs Verdam leads the team with a 1-1 record at No. 1 singles.
Bethune Cookman is 1-1 on the season after splitting matches last weekend against FAU (L, 6-1) and Northwood (W, 6-3). The Wildcats are led by transfer Juan Varon who is 2-0 at No. 4 singles.
