FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s tennis sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) finished the weekend with a perfect 2-0 singles record and a 2-0 doubles mark. For his performance, Tsamas claimed his first career Atlantic Sun Player of the Week award, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
The award is only the second ever Player of the Week award for the Eagles, who last won the award in 2008 with Andrew Kam.
Tsamas helped the Eagles to a perfect 2-0 record last weekend with victories against Georgia Southern (W, 5-2) and Bethune-Cookman (W, 5-2).
“I couldn’t be more happy for Dean, he has been so disciplined with his training since I’ve gotten here,” said first-year head coach C.J. Weber. “It’s always nice to get rewarded for your efforts and be recognized by the conference.”
Against Georgia Southern on Saturday, Tsamas won the clinching point at No. 4 singles against Kyle Hoffman, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) and teamed with junior Collin Brown (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) to win at No. 3 doubles against Sebastien Felt and Daniel Rush, 8-2.
In the match against Bethune-Cookman on Sunday, the Lexington, Ky. product, won in straight sets against previously undefeated Juan Varon, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles. Tsamas finished the perfect weekend in style by coming back to win in doubles by teaming with Brown for an, 8-5, win against Gilbert Kibet and Vitor Belucci, at No. 3 doubles.
Next up for the Eagles is their first road contest against FAU on Saturday, February 11. The match is set for a 2:00 p.m. start in Boca Raton, Fla.
