FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team is set for Atlantic Sun conference member Mercer on Thursday, Mar. 15 at 1 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The Eagles (4-4, 1-0 A-Sun) took down Kennesaw State, 5-2, on Mar. 1 to open up 1-0 in conference for the first-time ever. The Green and Blue also have non-conference wins against Georgia Southern (W, 5-2), Bethune-Cookman (W, 5-2) and blanked SIU-Edwardsville (W, 7-0). FGCU recently lost to then-No. 75 Penn, 5-2, on Mar. 9 at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
“We have another conference match and these matches are always wars,” said first-year head coach C.J. Weber. “I know both programs are looking to start off the season on the right foot, so we expect nothing but a very tough match.”
Freshman Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) has won three-straight dual matches to improve his record to 5-3. Bao defeated then-No. 83 Ivan Turudic at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, to give FGCU its first victory over an individually ranked opponent since 2008.
Sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) has a team-leading 6-2 dual match record with a 4-2 record at No. 3 singles, while classmate Lance Lvovsky (Dania,Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) has a 5-3 dual match mark, playing mostly at No. 5 singles. Junior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) is second on the team with a 5-2 dual match record, including a 2-0 mark at No. 2 singles.
In doubles, Tsamas and junior Collin Brown (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) lead the team with a 4-2 dual match record at No. 3 doubles.
Mercer enters its first A-Sun match with a 3-5 record after falling to Wake Forrest, 6-1, on Mar. 10. The Bears are led by Pierre Tafelski with a 2-3 record at No. 1 singles and Peter Tauchner with a 4-3 dual match record. The Eagles trail the all-time series with a 1-3 mark with their lone win coming in 2008 in Fort Myers, Fla.
