FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off a strong showing at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships last weekend in Georgia, the FGCU men’s tennis team will continue its strong fall schedule on Friday when it begins play at the 2012 Bedford Cup hosted by the University of Florida.
The 64-team singles draw includes six Eagles, while FGCU will put three doubles teams in the 32-team doubles draw.
The Bedford Cup was started in 2011 to feature the top collegiate men’s tennis players from all 11 NCAA Division I men’s tennis programs in the state of Florida. It is sponsored by the Youth Tennis Foundation of Florida, Inc., and the Edward T. Bedford Foundation.
“The Bedford Cup is a great tournament where every Division I team in the state of Florida will be represented,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “It will be equally as tough as the Southern Intercollegiate and I’m looking forward to building off of last week’s performances.”
FGCU will take a lineup that features four players that took part in last week’s season-opening event, while redshirt senior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) and freshman Dylan Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights HS) will see their first action of the year.
Junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) accounted for two of FGCU’s six singles wins last weekend, as the Lexington, Ky. product advanced through the field of 64 in the Division II bracket all the way to the Round of 16. Tsamas went 2-1 in Georgia, taking four straight sets from opponents from fellow Atlantic Sun members Kennesaw State and Mercer before dropping a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 match to Ole Miss’ Zach Wilder.
Sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) made his FGCU debut last weekend and opened in style with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 victory against Jeff Offerdahl of Vanderbilt in the Division I Singles draw. Vives finished the opening weekend with a 1-1 singles record and 0-1 doubles mark with his singles defeat coming against No. 21 Jonas Lutjen of Ole Miss, who went on to win the tournament. A transfer from 2012 National Champ USC, Vives will team with 2012 A-Sun Freshman of the Year Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS (FL)) in doubles play this weekend at the Bedford Cup. Bao went 0-2 in singles play last weekend, but fell to a pair of ACC foes from Georgia Tech and Clemson, winning at least three points in each set.
The final returner from last weekend will be sophomore Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS), who was the only FGCU player to have at least one win in both singles and doubles play. Beiler teamed with senior Colin Brown (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) in the Division II Doubles draw and used a pair of wins, highlighted by a victory against Georgia Tech, to advance to the Round of 16. Beiler will team with Gunning this weekend, giving FGCU a pair of doubles squads that are all underclassmen.
