MACON, Ga. – Following a successful 2-1 opening dual match weekend in singles play, FGCU men’s tennis junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) has been named the first Atlantic Sun Player of the Week for the championship spring season, announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The A-Sun Player of the Week honor is the second of Tsamas’ career, as he won the award last February. He’s one of just two players in program history to be named A-Sun Player of the Week, joining Andrew Kam who won the award in 2008.
This is Tsamas’ second career A-Sun Player of the Week honor and third in FGCU’s program history. Andrew Kam is the only men’s tennis player to win the award, which he accomplished back in 2008.
Combined with his 7-5 record in the fall and 1-1 weekend at the FGCU Spring Invitational, Tsamas now leads the team with 10 singles (10-6) victories on the year.
On Friday, Tsamas suffered his only loss on the weekend when he fell to Jordan Kelly-Houston (3-6, 6-1, 6-2) of No. 32 Florida State in a hard-fought three sets. Tsamas bounced back by defeating Chris Helliar (2-6, 7-5, 6-2) of No. 73 UAB on Saturday. The Lexington, Ky. product finished the weekend with a win at No. 2 singles over Chidi Garbriel (7-6 (4), 6-2) of FAMU.
FGCU (1-2) will return to action with a two-game home weekend that starts on Friday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. against Troy. The Eagles will cap the weekend with a 6 p.m. night match against SMU on Saturday, Feb. 2. For up-to-date information on FGCU, follow the team on twitter @FGCU_MTEN.
