FORT MYERS, Fla. – Winners of two of its last three matches, the FGCU men’s tennis team will return to action this weekend when it takes on UCF on Friday and Connecticut on Saturday in Orlando.
The Eagles are off to a 2-3 start to their championship season, picking up wins over FAMU and Troy before playing in front of a program record crowd of 992 fans at home against SMU. Friday’s match against the Knights will begin at 2 p.m., while Saturday’s showdown with the Huskies is slated for 11 a.m. at the UCF Tennis Complex. Admission to the matches is free.
UCF (3-4) has also won two of its last three, but is coming off a tough 4-3 loss against No. 75 Louisiana-Lafayette. Weather has cancelled UConn’s first two scheduled matches, but the Huskies will play Webber International on Friday before taking on the Eagles.
Sophomore Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS-FL) turned in a huge weekend against Troy and SMU, going a combined 2-0 in singles action at the top spot and No. 2 position in the lineup en route to being named the A-Sun Player of the Week. Junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) took home the first A-Sun Player of the Week award earlier in the year. Tsamas leads the team with three singles wins in the spring followed by a quartet with two.
