MACON, Ga. – Sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) became the third FGCU men’s tennis player this spring to be named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week on Wednesday after posting a perfect weekend against UCF and UConn.
Vives joins teammates Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) and Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) to give the Eagles three of the league’s five A-Sun weekly honors this spring.
A native of Barcelona, Spain, Vives went 2-0 at No. 1 singles over the weekend, surrendering just eight games over his final four sets. He opened the two-match weekend with a comeback three-set victory over UCF’s Jorge Blasco, who had won three straight entering the match. Vives picked up his second win of the weekend with a straight-set 6-2, 6-1 win over Wayne Harrell of UConn.
Vives combined with senior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) to also go 2-0 at top doubles. FGCU earned the doubles point in both matches aided by Vives and Moore’s 8-3 and 8-4 wins against the Knights and Huskies’ top doubles tandems, respectively.
FGCU is out to a 3-4 start to its championship season and will host BIG XII foe Oklahoma State (5-2) on Saturday at 5 p.m. In-match updates can be found by following the team on twitter @FGCU_MTEN.
