FORT MYERS, Fla. – Riding the momentum of back-to-back wins over UConn and Oklahoma State, the FGCU men’s tennis team will look for its first win over a ranked opponent this season when it hosts No. 54 Old Dominion on Friday at 6 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Last Saturday night, the Eagles rallied to defeat Oklahoma State, 4-3, behind wins in the top four singles spots en route to improving their record to 4-4. FGCU’s win ended a five-match OSU win streak, while the Green and Blue will be facing an ODU club that has won three in a row by a convincing 16-2 margin. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Over its two-match win streak, FGCU has gone 10-2 in singles play, including a perfect 8-0 in the top four spots in the lineup. The combination of sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC), sophomore Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS-FL) and junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS), who have all been named A-Sun Player of the Week this spring, has produced an 8-1 singles record in the top 3 spots in the last three matches and an 11-4 mark over the last five.
One of three Eagles on a three-match win streak in singles, Tsamas leads the team with a 6-2 mark that is spread out at the No. 2 spot (2-1) and No. 3 spot (4-1), respectively. All three of Vives wins have come at the top spot, while Bao’s 4-4 record has come at No. 1 (1-2) and No. 2 (3-2). Redshirt junior Gabe Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) is the third FGCU player with three straight wins.
Ranked No. 54 in the Feb. 26th ITA Rankings, Old Dominion is 7-3 on the year. The match will be the Lions’ first since Feb. 17 when they defeated Navy, 6-1, to finish off a four-match homestand. ODU is led by sophomore Carlos Lopez Villa, who has started the championship campaign with 10 straight wins at top singles.
