MACON, Ga. – FGCU men’s tennis sophomore Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament second team to collect the second conference honor for FGCU, the A-Sun confirmed.
“This is an honor well-deserved by Bao this year, and another first for the FGCU Eagle program,” said head coach CJ Weber. “He demonstrated that he was one of the best players in the conference this year by even beating one of the 1st Team All-Conference players. I’m very happy for Bao and all of his achievements thus far as an FGCU Eagle.”
Bao posted a 13-8 overall singles record in the 2013 spring season, while going 6-2 in A-Sun play. Bao ended the season strong by going 7-2 in his last nine singles matches.
Being most frequently used in the second singles spot, Bao sported an 8-6 record at the position, while having gone a perfect 4-0 in the No. 3 spot for the Eagles.
The moment he shined the brightest in 2013 came during a comeback victory against Big XII member Oklahoma State at the FGCU Tennis Complex. With the match tied 3-3, the final point came down to Bao and Oklahoma State’s Chris Haworth on the No. 2 singles court.
Bao took the first set, 7-5, but fell 5-7 in the second set after dropping three straight games to finish. The reigning A-Sun Freshman of the Year regrouped and jumped out to a 5-3 lead in final set before finishing off the 6-4 win. The last three points of the match came on broken serves.
