STATESBORO, Ga. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis team continued action at the Georgia Southern Championships with a pair of wins in singles and doubles action. Gabe Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) once again led the Eagles with a singles victory and will compete in the tournament championship match on Sunday.
“Today was a great day for us, especially on the doubles court. We have so much to learn and improve on in doubles and this is a perfect tournament for us to continue to work on some things we’ve been focusing on in practice,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “Gabe is playing great tennis. He has shown a lot of toughness out on the court and he is staying disciplined to playing within his identity. I look forward to the opportunity for him tomorrow.”
Echeverry began his trek toward the championship on Friday when he defeated Luca Cerin of Armstrong Atlantic State University and conference foe David Durham of Kennesaw State. The senior went on to defeat University of North Florida’s Pablo 6-0, 6-3 to advance in the tournament bracket. Echeverry will face Armstrong Atlantic’s Ignacio Hernandez in the tournament championship match Sunday.
Adrian Reid (Lima, Peru/Altair School) split a pair of matches in Friday’s action and improved to 2-1 on the weekend with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over FAU’s Stefan Burnett Saturday afternoon.
“I’m very happy for Adrian, getting his first couple of wins as an Eagle,” continued Weber. “He had to work very hard for that first ‘W’, but now he is playing great tennis and I can’t wait to see his back draw final match against another quality opponent.”
Reid will continue bracket play on Sunday afternoon when he faces Armstrong Atlantic’s Luca Cerin. Both players have dropped just one match at six-team tournament.
Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) went 1-1 in “A” bracket action on Friday before taking on UNF’s Caio Gomes this afternoon. Lvovsky fell to Gomes, 6-2, 6-2 to conclude his run in Georgia.
The final singles player left in action on Saturday afternoon was redshirt freshman Chris Perrigan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay HS). Perrigan fell in two matches on Friday and was defeated, 6-2, 6-2, by the home team’s Kyle Hoffman.
The Eagles had a stronger day in doubles play, with each duo recording a win. The pair of Perrigan and Lvovsky fell to Georgia Southern’s Rush and Kerrigan, 6-3, before bouncing back with an 8-6 win over Atlantic Sun opponents Pritchard and Bouchillon of Kennesaw State.
Reid and Echeberry also fell in their first match. The duo recorded a 9-7 loss to Armstrong Atlantic’s Cerin and Hernandez but turned the tides to earn an 8-4 win over Osorio and De Goof of Georgia Southern in the later match.
Both doubles teams will continue doubles action on Sunday.
