@FGCU_MTEN Tests No. 36 FSU, Falls 6-1
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team opened the 2014 dual-match season with a 6-1 loss to No. 36 Florida State Saturday afternoon in Tallahassee. Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) picked up the lone point.
The Eagles fall to 0-1 on the season while FSU improves to 5-0.
“Today was a good opportunity for us,” head coach C.J. Weber said. “We fought hard and matches like this will teach us how to play sharper and more disciplined. FSU is very well coached and they played well.”
The ‘Noles jumped to an early 1-0 lead after claiming two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Picking up a win for the Green and Blue were partners Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) and Lucas Vaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Fleming/Tulsa) whose contest with João Gauer and Cristian Gonzales Mendez demonstrated the one of the many newly sanctioned ITA rules. Each pair held serve until 5-5, forcing a tiebreak. Vaz and Echeverry broke the pair of Seminoles to win the tiebreak 7-5 and clinch the match 6-5.
Vives collected FGCU’s sole point with a magnificent comeback over Dominic Cotrone in the No. 1 singles slot. After dropping the first set 6-4 to Cotrone, Vives fought back in the second. He broke his opponent’s serve, leading to a 6-4 result in Vives’ favor. Using the momentum he built during the previous set to his advantage, Vives controlled play in the tiebreak to win 10-5 and earn the overall victory.
The victory over Cotrone extends Vives unbeaten streak to 10, with his last lost occurring 98 days ago.
In No. 2 singles Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) rallied back from a 6-2 drop of the first set to win the second set 6-4 over Blake Davis and force a third set tiebreak. Bao fought hard looking to power through but could shake Davis who took the third 10-6 to win the match.
In their five matches this season, the Seminoles have only given up three points, one to FGCU and two to South Alabama. Last weekend Atlantic Sun Conference members North Florida and Mercer both suffered 4-0 shutouts to FSU.
The Eagles will return to action tomorrow in Tallahassee facing Nebraska at 1:00 p.m. and return to The Nest on Jan. 24 as they host SMU at 5:00 p.m.
