MACON, Ga. – One week into the 2014 season, ITA No. 66 Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) was named Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
The well-deserved honor comes as a result of Vives’ back-to-back wins in last weekend’s dual matches against No. 36 Florida State and No. 60 Nebraska, playing in the No. 1 singles slot. In his first match of 2014, the Barcelona native took down FSU’s Domonic Cotrone 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) and continued on to defeat Nebraska’s Dusty Boyer 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 the day after.
Currently riding an 11-match win streak, Vives’ has not suffered an individual singles loss in 102 days and became FGCU’s first nationally ranked D-I player when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its opening wave of rankings on Jan. 2.
A unanimous selection to the 2013 A-Sun All Conference First Team, this marks Vives’ second weekly honor and the program’s sixth all-time. After sweeping No. 1 singles matches versus UCF and UConn, Vives was named Player of the Week for the inaugural time in his career on Feb. 20, 2013.
The Eagles return to the court to host SMU in a dual match under the lights of the FGCU Tennis Complex on Jan. 24 at 5 p.m.
