ESTERO, Fla. – Winning its second-straight match, the FGCU men’s tennis team topped Troy, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Estero, Fla.
The Eagles improve to 5-6 on the season, while the Trojans drop to 1-9.
The Eagles pulled ahead early as they won the doubles point for a 1-0 advantage. Earning the first victory for FGCU were partners Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) and Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) with a dominant 8-1 defeat of Mansingh Athare and Sami Gohrbel in the No.1 slot. Remaining undefeated at No. 3 doubles, Lucas Vaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Fleming/Tulsa) and Chris Perrigan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay HS) claimed an 8-4 victory over Tommy Cundy and Daniel Bustamante, clinching the point for FGCU.
“We played a very impressive doubles point today,” head coach CJ Weber said. “We got on top early and never let go. All three doubles pairs are playing great and I love watching our team chemistry when we play. I’m especially proud of Lucas and Chris as they have been a huge part of our doubles success in the last few matches.”
The Green and Blue started slow in singles play, but were able to pull wins in four matches. Collecting the first was Tsamas, reigning victorious in the No. 3 slot against Karen Khachatryan. After dropping the first set an uncontested 6-0, Khachatryan retired from the match, trailing Tsamas 3-0 in the second, to hand FGCU another point. Joining his doubles partner in the winner’s circle was No. 54 Vives topping Gabriel Sciacca Dias, 7-5, 6-1, in the No. 1 slot.
Clinching the match for the Eagles was Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) pulling a win in six singles over Tadju Davies. After falling 2-6 in the first set, Echeverry turned his game around to take the second set 6-4, before shutting out Davies 6-0 in the third for the overall victory.
Posting the remaining win was Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) in the No. 2 match. Facing Sami Gohrbel, Bao dropped the first set a close 3-6, but regained control to win the second 7-6 (4) and the tiebreak 1-0 (10-6).
“Our singles game started very lethargic,” Webber said. “And Troy just about made us pay for it. Thankfully, we had great comeback wins from Jordi, Bao and Gabe to let us win the match.”
The Eagles continue action in the Atlantic Sun Conference traveling to ETSU on Mar. 14 at 2 p.m., and USC Upstate on Mar. 15 at 2 p.m. For complete coverage of FGCU men’s tennis this season, follow us on Twitter @FGCU_MTEN and visit www.FGCUAthletics.com where full recaps and results will be available.
