DUNK CITY, Fla. – FGCU men's basketball head coach
Joe Dooley announced Monday that redshirt senior
Jamail Jones has been suspended for the Gulf Coast Showcase, a three-game tournament which the Eagles tip off this evening against Marist, for a violation of team rules.
In addition to the Marist game,
Jones (Atlanta, Ga./Montverde Academy/Marquette) will miss FGCU's matchup on Tuesday against either San Francisco or Hawaii, and also the final game of the eight-team tournament at Germain Arena on Wednesday.
After finishing last year strong, Jones opened this season with consecutive double-doubles, and through the first three games of the campaign is averaging 14 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Jones was named an Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference Team member after averaging 8.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in 2013-14.
FGCU will get redshirt junior
Julian DeBose back on Monday, as the Rice transfer is expected to see his first action with the Green and Blue after serving his own three-game suspension for a violation of team rules. A Washington, D.C., native, DeBose started all 31 games in his final season at Rice as a sophomore in 2012-13, finishing second on the team in scoring (10.4 per game) and rebounding (4.3 per game). The 6-4 guard scored in double figures 19 times that year, highlighted by a career-high 20 points against New Orleans in January.
FGCU is off to a 3-0 start to the season and tips off the second-annual Gulf Coast Showcase, presented and hosted by bd Global, Monday at 6 p.m. against Marist. The field features five teams which won at least 20 games last year and five clubs which made postseason appearances. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting the CenturyLink Box Office at Germain Arena or online at Ticketmaster.com. Student tickets are just $5 with a valid Eagle ID.
