Knudstrup, Weigand Earn FGCU Athletics Academic Honor

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Athletics Department has named women's soccer player Camille Knudstrup and men's cross country runner Max Weigand as recipients of the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month award for October.

Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communication Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.

Knudstrup (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) is a psychology major who has posted a 3.91 GPA in her first year-plus at FGCU. During her freshman year on the Southwest Florida campus, she was a member of both the Dean's List with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and the President's List with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Additionally, she was recently named to the ASUN All-Academic Team.

A sophomore outside back for the Eagles, Knudstrup is an important defensive cog on a team that not only claimed its seventh straight ASUN regular season title, but also punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons with another ASUN Tournament championship. The Lakeland native was a vital part of the Eagles' defense that allowed an ASUN-leading 13 goals – fifth lowest in conference history – and pitched nine shutouts this season. In league play, the Green and Blue silenced the opposition to only four goals, which was four fewer than Lipscomb's second-place total.

Following her freshman season during which she scored her first collegiate goal and assisted on four others while earning a start in all 22 contests, Knudstrup was named a unanimous selection to the ASUN All-Freshman team.

Similarly, Weigand (Penzberg, Germany/Gymnasium Penzberg) is also a psychology major with a 3.91 GPA after his first three semesters in Southwest Florida. Currently up for ASUN All-Academic honors, Weigand is a two-time member of the Dean's List and one-time member of the President's List since enrolling at FGCU in the spring of 2015.

After competing in only two races during his freshman season with the Green and Blue, the Penzberg native was arguably the most improved runner on this year's team that won a trio of races and is about to cap off its best season in program history at the NCAA South Regional Championship this weekend. The lone Eagle to compete in all six races this season, Weigand turned in a trio of top-10 finishes, including a sixth-place finish with a personal-best time of 25:51.50 at the Upstate Invitational. His time was not only nearly two minutes faster than his previous best, but also registers as the third fastest by a sophomore runner in program history. Four weeks later, he went on to finish 22nd at the ASUN Championships, where FGCU turned in a program-record 68 points and finished third for the second straight season.
