FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Athletics Department has named volleyball player
Maggie Rick and men's soccer player
Arion Sobers-Assue as recipients of the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month award for November.
Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communication Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.
Rick (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic) is a business management major with a 3.83 cumulative GPA. Recently named to the ASUN All-Academic Team for her efforts both on the court and in the classroom, Rick is also a two-time member of the Dean's List for turning in a GPA of 3.5 higher during the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters.
On the court, Rick not only became the second Eagle in program history to earn ASUN Setter of the Year honors, but was also one of three members of the Green and Blue to be named First Team All-Conference after leading the league with 1,260 assists and averaging a conference-high 10.59 assists per set. Her totals in assists and assists per set not only led the conference, but also ranked fourth and second, respectively, in FGCU's single-season history. The Alpharetta, Ga., native piloted FGCU's offense to an ASUN-best .267 hitting percentage with helpers on 79 percent of the Eagles' 1,599 kills. Rick tallied 50-plus assists in four matches this year, including a season-high 64 against USC Upstate on Nov. 11.
Following an impressive freshman campaign in 2015, Rick was tabbed Second Team All-Conference and a member of the ASUN All-Freshman Team. Through two seasons with the Green and Blue, her 2,458 assists rank third in program history, and she stands less than 2,000 shy of
Gigi Meyer's career record. Additionally, Rick's 10.28 career assists per set is currently second all-time.
Sobers-Assue (Miami, Fla./DeMatha Catholic) is a legal studies major with a 3.18 cumulative GPA and has been named to the FGCU Athletic Director's Honor Roll on three occasions in only four semesters on the Southwest Florida campus.
After playing a vital role on the nation's highest-scoring offense that registered 62 goals (next closest: 53) and 179 points (next closest: 160), Sobers-Assue was not only one of four Eagles named First Team All-Conference, but was also one of a program-record four individuals named to National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Southeast Region teams. If not for teammate and ASUN Player of the Year
Albert Ruiz's (Barcelona, Spain/CE L'Hospitalet/UE Cornella) goal (22) and point (49) totals, Sobers-Assue's 11 goals and 33 points would have been single-season program records. In addition to ranking second in the ASUN in both categories, Sobers-Assue was eighth in the nation in points and tied for 19th in the country in goals.
With two seasons of eligibility remaining after sitting out all of the 2015 season with a knee injury, the Miami native currently ranks tied for second in program history in career assists (12), fourth in points (36) and tied for fifth in goals (12).
