Means, Selesky Earn FGCU Athletics Academic Honor

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Athletics Department has named women's tennis player Elizabeth Means and men's baseball player Tyler Selesky as recipients of the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month award for March.

Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communication Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.

Means (Washington, D.C./Wiregrass Ranch HS) has epitomized what it means to be a student-athlete during her four-year career at FGCU. On the courts, she capped off her senior year with a 5-1 record in conference play and was named a Second Team All-Conference performer for the second consecutive season. Following her Senior Day ceremony against Stetson on April 9, Means, has tallied 45 career singles wins and 38 career doubles victories, finished the regular season in fitting fashion as she clinched the match with a straight-set win and helped FGCU secure the No. 2 seed in this weekend's conference tournament.

A year ago, Means earned 2015 A-Sun Second Team All-Conference honors and was also named an All-Tournament Team performer after leading the Green and Blue to its first A-Sun Championship finals appearance in program history. Additionally, in 2013, Means was named an All-Freshman Team selection.

Earlier this week, Means became the first FGCU women's tennis player to earn Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors and was named to the All-Academic Team for the third straight season. As a double major in management and computer science, she has made the President's List with a perfect 4.0 GPA on four occasions while also being named to the Dean's List (3.5+ GPA) on three separate occasions. She has been named to the FGCU Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester since stepping foot on campus in 2013 and was also a FGCU Student-Athlete Honors Luncheon Recipient during all three years of eligibility from 2014-16. Earlier this spring, Means was not only one of 15 female student-athletes across the country to be named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Semi-Finalist, but was also inducted into the FGCU Hall of Fame.

Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) is in the midst of another career year in his final season with the Green and Blue baseball team. Entering the week, the local product ranked second on the team in runs (32), third in average (.326) and RBI (26) and fourth in hits (45). Additionally, his run total ranked sixth in the conference while he was also tied for ninth in hits, tied for 10th in RBI and 11th in average.

A 2015 A-Sun Second Team All-Conference selection, Selesky is a .312 career hitter and is currently climbing the ranks of a few program records including games played (178), runs scored (121) and doubles (40). A member of the 2016 senior class, he also played a key role in the program's fourth and most recent A-Sun Regular Season Championship in 2014.

Selesky has compiled a 3.33 cumulative GPA as a marketing major during his four years at FGCU. He is a three-time member of the Dean's List for turning in a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the fall 2012, spring 2015 and fall 2015 semesters, and has made the FGCU Athletic's Director Honor Roll on five separate occasions. In March, Selesky was named a 2016 Senior CLASS Award Candidate for demonstrating excellence in the community, in the classroom, through his character and on the competitive field.
